Gen Z And Its Love For Youtube

There are so many new terminologies for different generations recently, and they are sometimes confusing. Recently, I got to know about these - Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, baby boomers, etc. which I was clueless about.

So, I just googled them, because Google knows everything which I don’t. Just FYI -
  1. Gen X  are those who are born between 1961-1980
  2. Gen Y or Millennials are born between 1981-1994
  3. Gen Z are the folks born between 1995-2012

Going from 3rd to 1st, Gen Z is the generation where video content is watched the most on social media. Millennials know about watching series and movies on a TV, but Gen Z doesn’t share that with the millennials. For Gen Z, video content is preferred over written content and they spend most of their social media time on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, SnapChat, Twitter, etc. According to the survey by Business Insider, Gen Z spent 65% of their time on Instagram, while Gen Z YouTube stats were 62%.

Smartphones are the lifeline of Gen Z. The use of Smartphones is tremendous in Gen Z, from uploading content on social media to watching a video or reading something. For millennials (Gen Ys) watching things on smartphones can be comparatively less. But for Gen Z, watching videos and movies on their smartphones is the way in most cases. As per ‘Think with Google’, watching videos on mobile consists of more than 3 hours per day, for 7 in 10 teens.

YouTube has been the most loved and watched social media for Gen Z, and 85% of teens watch YouTube. Videos of all kinds - educational, entertainment, documentaries, opinions, news, etc. are watched by Gen Z on YouTube every day. More than written content, video content in terms of learning and blogging is preferred by them. This has given rise to a new concept called vlogging, which involves blogging in a video format. If you ask a teenager who loves social media, what he wants to be, his answer will be to become a famous vlogger or a celebrity on the social media platforms like PewDiePie. You know PewDiePie, right? Vloggers are very popular on social media, who earn in millions, so if you want to endorse a product, you can choose the influencer as a vlogger, rather than going for a traditional TV advert.

According to the studies, Gen Z loves YouTube. But why Gen Z loves YouTube is a question? Gen Z has a lot of pressure on them when it comes to expectations. To run away from these, they seek solace in interactive social media like YouTube, Snapchat or Twitter. YouTube is the solution for such teenagers to decompress themselves and learn something new or bust the stress. The videos found on YouTube are informative, and helps in the productive learning process with DIY projects, along with improving the skill set. Because of the huge audience belonging to Gen Z for Instagram and especially YouTube, YouTube content creators are creating content which can interest Gen Z.

Facebook, Snapchat, and TikTok come behind YouTube when it comes to watching content online by Gen Z. It proves that visual content is taking over today. Gen Z is passionate about the digital media and goods and as per a study  and they’ll make up to 40% of all consumers by 2020.  Also, as per Forbes magazine, the key to Gen Z is video content. No wonder video content is preferred over written content so much nowadays, and YouTube is the fav of Gen Z.
